Workshop B : FORENSIC INVESTIGATION OF A BITE MARK IN AN INANIMATE OBJECT : CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION & ANALYSIS

(International Organisation for Forensic Odonto-Stomatology)

Chair: Herman Bernitz, Tore Solheim.

No of participants: limited to 30 .

Program description:

This participation workshop is aimed at empowering forensic scientists to cope with crime scene cases involving tooth marks. It will be restricted to bite marks in inanimate objects, and the workshop will use bite marks in cheese. At the conclusion of this hands-on course the participants will have a working knowledge of protocols to be followed when confronted with a bite mark. They will also have a good understanding of the principles involved in analyzing the material for court presentation. They will understand the difficulties induced by warping shrinkage and distortion, and understand the limitations of the entire process. Skin bite marks will be discussed, but only to highlight the pitfalls and degree of expertise required when these are analyzed, and to illustrate the differences between bite marks in skin and inanimate objects.
The workshop will include
      - Introduction to tooth marks and bite marks
      - Protocol to be followed when confronted with a cheese bite mark (applies to a range of inanimate objects). Hands-on
      - Basic principles of concordance
      - Hands-on matching of bite marks with models of possible suspects
      - Basic principles of warping, shrinkage and distortion.
      - Resumé of current analysis techniques
      - Court reports.

Note: Each participant is required to bring his own study models, ABFO#2 ruler, a camera and the legal requirements regarding crime scene investigation/taking impressions of suspects in his or her own country: they will then share this information with the other members
